That 1-story a & g came from Italian scribes (italic) after a long history of writing Latin letters w/ a quill. Scribes only wrote “lowercase” until 1425 when uc & lc were combined by Poggio Bracciolini

    alanlawlor usefulcharts dlooney The 2 story lowercase (“minuscule”) a & g come from carolingian scribes, which is another interesting story worth checking out. The underlying structure of these hasn’t really evolved since pre-Gutenberg. It’s also good to distinguish between “type” (fonts) and “lettering” here.
