JTDType I’ve been doing this ever since the Dunbar variable fonts were released in 2016. I sell VFs with just the weight axis for Dunbar and Louvette, which are cheaper than buying the larger family VFs with optical size, ×-height (Dunbar), hairline and descender axes (Louvette)

JTDType There’s some functionality being added to FontTools which will make it easier to dynamically subset variable font axes, ie drop axes, pin axes, clip axes, etc using varlib.instancer, see: github.com/fonttools/fonttools/issues/1537#issuecomment-474983825 github.com/fonttools/fonttools/pull/1628 and: github.com/fonttools/fonttools/blob/master/Lib/fontTools/varLib/instancer.py
